Chapter 18

Ophelia

I don’t know why I had zero chill about the situation, it was more money than I’d ever see in my lifetime, the sex was phenomenal, and Asher had been nothing but a perfect gentleman. His business dealings were a little suspect, but weren’t all billionaires somewhat shady? I was pretty sure he wasn’t murdering people unless that whole basement thing was a lie. The truth was I was falling for him too; hard and fast. I didn’t want a fake wedding; I wanted a real one. Maybe not next week, that was a little hasty, but maybe someday? Those were dangerous thoughts, and I knew it, so I pushed them out of my head.

“Asher, I don’t need ‘until death do us part,’ but you know I’d like something more than just ‘let’s fuck since you’ll be here a while.’ I never expected I’d have the white picket fence, but I thought maybe someone would love me.” I had to shut up, or I’d start to cry.

“I love you,” Asher said quietly. “I love the way your hand curls into a fist under your chin when you sleep. I love how bawdy you are despite your inexperience. I adore your snarky tongue, though I might add it will get you into trouble one day. You might be an imposter out there stealing identities to build your career, but I like you better when you’re being honest.” He smiled at me in a way that made all the words true.

“I really want to hate you,” was all I gave him.

“I’m sure you do. I’d really want to hate me too.” He laughed with the deep husky tone that always made my vagina want to throw a party. “But if you admitted that you liked me, even more than just a little, that would be nice.”

“I might like you, Asher, but I don’t trust you.”

At the heart of all of it, I wasn’t sure how much of what he said were the words of an expert liar and manipulator. He did pay me to marry him, what billionaire does that? Surely, there was one woman on earth with enough integrity not to go digging in his pockets. There had to be someone who would love him for the crumpled-up mess he was inside. That was the part I found hard to believe; he hadn’t found anyone who wanted to marry him. Asher, the guy and not Asher Davis the billionaire. He was a good ten years older than me; he definitely had had enough time.

“That’s fair; I don’t know if I’d trust me if I were you.” I hated it when he gave me those kinds of answers because it didn’t do anything to alleviate my fears. “But you can still like me and not trust me.” He hit me with his boyish smile.

“Okay, I like you.” I stared at him as if to challenge him to say more.

“Great, I like you too ... a lot.” He threw my glare right back at me.
